Mexico vs. Ghana Preview

By: Inara | March 26th, 2008 | 9 Comments »

ghanamex.jpgGhana are eager to erase the sting of their African Cup of Nations campaign with their first match since their third place game against the Ivory Coast. While this is just a friendly, the two teams involved are currently the highest ranked in their respective confederations (Mexico - CONACAF, Ghana - CAF) and play two completely different styles of football that should make for an interesting 90 minutes.

Hans Adu-Sarpei has had to pull out with a last minute injury, and due to the timing, LeRoy has opted not to call anyone up to replace him. However, Laryea Kingston is cleared to play, though his club, Hearts, is furious and plans to complain to the Ghana FA. Good luck with that.

LeRoy Names Squad for Mexico Friendly

By: Inara | March 19th, 2008 | 1 Comment »

Claude LeRoy (who is still around…unfortunately) recently released the list of players he’ll be taking to London to face Mexico next week. Ghana and Mexico have faced each other only once before, and that was back in March 2006 in a friendly in the United States (Mexico won 1-0). Ghana, who are still Africa’s top ranked footballing nation - or ... [read]

Moving Forward

By: Inara | February 10th, 2008 | No Comments »

Wow. What a week for the Black Stars. Due to a particularly hectic work week, I wasn’t able to keep up with my blogging duties or even sit down to watch the games, but at some point I did remember to check the result of the Ghana-Cameroon match. I was pretty disappointed, but I can’t say I’m that surprised.
From ... [read]

This Ain’t No Black Sunday: Ghana vs. Nigeria

By: Inara | February 3rd, 2008 | 1 Comment »

This might only be a quarterfinal match, but Ghana vs. Nigeria may end up being the most massive game in the tournament besides the final (maybe). Both teams have been performing below expectations and will have angry fans pushing them to do what sheer talent cannot achieve alone. And unlike the last time these two teams met up (Ghana thrashed ... [read]

Sir Fergie Would Like Ghana and the Ivory Coast in the Finals

By: Inara | February 2nd, 2008 | 2 Comments »

alex-ferguson.thumbnail.jpgSir Alex Ferguson is one of the few EPL managers out there who enjoys the African Cup of Nations. Of course it helps that the only player Manchester United have in the tournament will be going on loan to Panathinaikos, but the real reason for his enjoyment?
His main rivals Chelsea and Arsenal are ... [read]

Nigeria Start Talking Smack

By: Inara | February 1st, 2008 | 2 Comments »

It’s official. Ghana’s next opponents will be Nigeria. For those of you who don’t know (don’t be shy, I was one of them), this is a classico. One of the biggest and most bitter rivalries on the continent, Sunday’s quarterfinal match up between the Black Stars and the Super Eagles promises to be like a final in terms of build ... [read]

Black Stars Told to Lay Off on Sex

By: Inara | January 31st, 2008 | 2 Comments »

Sex makes you tired after all, and the last thing you need during a high stakes international training is extra exhaustion.
At least that’s what the Ghana coaches think. They told their players that during their 24 hour break time, they shouldn’t “engage in any sexual conduct (or misconduct), as that could have a toll on them and affect their ... [read]

LeRoy Faces Racial Charges

By: Inara | January 31st, 2008 | 7 Comments »

Ugh. The last thing we need during an already polarized tournament is someone saying something stupid. Especially when it’s the manager of the host country.
Claude LeRoy, Ghana’s resident French genius, is facing charges leveled by the African Confederation of Football (CAF) for racial misconduct. He has 24 hours to answer the charges.
During the ... [read]

Fenerbahce Betray Stephen Appiah

By: Inara | January 30th, 2008 | 13 Comments »

appiah.thumbnail.jpgStephen Appiah is pissed off.
He’s so pissed that not only is he thinking about leaving his club, but he’s gone public with his complaints. And as we all know, Appiah isn’t the complaining type. He’s the sort of guy who will smile through an earthquake, he’s that composed.
Remember a few weeks ago ... [read]
