Adjei Tells His Club to F*ck Off
Last week, Daryl alerted us to the plight of Sammy Adjei, whose club has threatened to fire him if he answers the summons of the Ghana FA to represent his country at the African Cup of Nations. The Israeli club, FC Ashdod, have told Adjei that if he leaves for Dubai to meet with the Black Stars for pre-tournament training, he can consider himself fired.
Currently, FIFA regulations state that clubs must release players 14 days before the start of an international tournament, and Adjei is already late. However, Adjei has decided to play for Ghana anyway and plans to meet up with his team on Saturday. Granted, he’s only the second choice keeper, but a man has to draw a line somewhere, and Adjei has decided where his will be. His agent has tried to smooth things over with Ashdod by pointing out that if they prevent Adjei from listening to Ghana’s summons, but both Adjei AND Ashdod will face bans.
I just don’t get it. Assdod Ashdod know that this is a law, right? Are they doing this because they think the African Cup of Nations is a waste of time, or do they feel this way about international tournaments in general? I mean, would Ashdod prevent their Israeli players from representing the Israeli NT for Euro 2008?
It’s troubling, and though we all know that Adjei is in the right, it’s poor comfort when you think that he’ll be unemployed at the end of the tournament.
I hope FIFA stick a huge ass fine up Ashdod’s ass. In fact, maybe they can just be banned from the face of the planet.

Brilliant news. I was really hoping he’d stand up to them.

Oh, and why does Ghana’s flag have white in the middle at the top of the page (right on top of the title of the article)?

Yes..that is NOT Ghana’s flag! Almost like the Arab league colors This site is excellent. Ghana is hosting this tourney. Do not leave a blemish on your site by not repping Ghana’ colors. For Allah’s sake.. the official AFCAN ‘08 ball should let you know the Colors (pretty much the colors of most African nations). Add the gold! Please fire up Photoshop and get that banner amended!

I’ll get on it. Wish we could say it was a special competition and you’ve won a prize or something, but it looks like a good old fashioned mistake. Thanks for spotting Sam.

Good for Adjei. It is so disrespectful when clubs act as if the competition dawned on them three weeks ago. They start the season and then december 15th they go “Oh shit, this ACN shenanigan seems to be happening!”

Yikes! How did I not notice that? It’s correctly displayed on the main page and on the side bar though.
