Who is the True African Lion?
Following the first performance from an African side, yesterday’s embarrassment by Cote D’Ivoire versus Argentina, the torch appears to be passed from Cote D’Ivoire as to the top African performer. Their introduction stanza showed the weakness that the strong attacking side has possessed all year, a porous and inconsistent defense. Faced by two more top notch technical squads, the Dutch and the Serbians, the Elephants will doubtless again be exploited by these sides set pieces. So the question becomes which African squad can take up the banner for Africa, now that the presumptive leader has fallen?
Togo, likely, will not be that leader. Losing their second head technician in 2006 just underscores the disorganization and lack of commitment that we have seen from the surprise qualifier and ultimate minnow of the tournament. Given that Trinidad has now scored a draw in the competition, Togo will struggle to avoid being deemed the worst squad in the tournament. Similarly, Angola is unlikely to pose much of a threat, given a strong group and the jitters of inexperience.
Tunisia has a weaker group, more experience, and a reasonable chance of advancement. However, doubt over the availability of Francileudo Dos Santos casts a cloud over the Carthage Eagles that might be difficult to resolve in the early games of the tournament.
This leaves Ghana, who is coming on strong and has matched a newly found potent attack to the strong defense that is always the prerequisite to World Cup success. Remember that these are the Stars that allowed only five goals during qualifying. And these are the Stars who will be the true pride of Africa in the tournament.

Until we see all the African teams play, it’s simply too early to answer that question. But my gut tells me Ghana.

Gee, as a Ghanaian I wish for Ghana to come out tops. Infact we will, ut shd be wary of the experience of the Italians which could be an asset for them at crunch times. Peace

Man What a HomeSter! Cote D’Ivoire can beat Ghana any day. Embarrasing performance??! That is more than an overstatement! We performed and did not embarrass the continent. We are neighbors and you guys are still sore from 92…..(for those of u unaware we beat them to win the CAF)
Come on man Ghana is my second favorite team from our dear continent but you guyz CAN NOT BEAT US. Good luck against the Italians cause thatS one thing we did not have against Argentina. Its all about Executing and Good luck.

a 2:1 loss to Argentina by IC is not that bad — and IC can still make it out of the group. At least they scored. Argentina is clearly the stronger team and expected to advance. IC made many good attempts at the goal and controlled the ball a lot during the game. They can still play well against Serbia and Holland.
Ghana — i’m rooting for you all the way. It doesn’t matter to me, which country advances from Africa — so long as at least one does.
