Credit Czechs, Don’t Fault U.S.
Looking back, now fondly, on Ghana’s new found advancement in Group play (and I guess it is unsurprising to have yet one more West African qualifier), the World Cup darlings truly have the Czech Republic to thank for their advancement.
Certainly, the opener versus Italy gave Ghana an understanding of World Cup pace and showed them that 90 full minutes of play were necessary for a result (and it gave them confidence, as they played strong for 80 minutes). But the surprising decision of the Czechs to hold out Baros and Koller (leading to a full scale change in strategy), probably underrating the threat that Ghana posed, in retrospect seems a questionable decision. Especially given that earning a tie versus Ghana would have earned them advancement on point differential. The Czechs will now be forced home to wonder what might have been.
And the U.S.? I guess one can’t complain at their effort. They were more hurt by disqualifications certainly than the Ghanaians were (sorry to Sulley, but Mastroeni meant more to the U.S.). And they can cry to their pillows about the supposedly shoddy foul by Nigerian strongman Onyewu. As many fans have noted, thanks to an African for getting us home. In reality, the U.S. did not have the striking talent to advance, and a draw would not have advanced them. Like the Stars, they were soft in their opening, but did not respond as forcefully in their rebound match. Maybe complaining about the refs will give them some comfort. For Ghana, we prefer the knockout rounds and a match versus Brazil.
Bring it on !!!

GO GHANA!! Play your game and beat those out-of-shape Brazilians!

Lars,
Not all whites people are the same. You seemed very reasonable. Thanks. I know the people of Scandinavia are very special in Europe. Even if Ghana loses, It is nice to know not all whites have ridiculed Ghana.
The African people will for ever be grateful to people like you who want to watch football and not laugh at other people’s heritage!!
Thanks a Million times.
Please visit Ghana some day. You will love the culture and the people. I can give you some tips

I’ve enjoyed watching Ghana’s fast and strong playing style in this tournament, and everyone I’ve spoken to who knows anything about football has had nothing but praise for the African teams.
I think today will be a great game, and hope Ghana turn over Brazil.
(I believe Pele predicted an African team would someday lift the world cup.)

“Bring it on!”
Careful what you wish for. Brazil is content to sit back and let Ghana attack, but when they decide to strike, they do just that, as evidenced by the score at halftime. I’d really love to see Ghana do well, however, realistically, Brazil is too big a mountain to climb.
“Supposedly shoddy foul”
You can’t honestly believe that Onyewu committed any foul whatsoever…much less warrant a PK. The blundering referee took away any opportunity the US had…whether they could’ve score is another matter, but we’ll never know, will we?. Any honest person watching the match could see that there was no foul. Bad calls and horrible officiating has tainted much of this WC.
It’s really sad for fans who expect to be entertained, but instead watch as referees committ egregious error after error. FIFA must raise their standards, because this is a huge turn off for fans around the world.

you’re still harping on the U.S. loss?! Jeez!!! GET OVER YOURSELF. YOU LOST!
you didn’t lose to an underdog, you lost to a powerhouse making their 1st entrance at the world cup.
There’s bad officiating everywhere, including adriano’s offside (even the 1st goal could easily have been called back for offsides), but we grin and bear it. We don’t whine days after our highly overrated team lost.

As I predicted, Brazil won 3-0. Sadly, it could have easily been 6-0 or even 7-0, but I think Brazil took some pity on the dejected and worn out Ghana side and flubbed those last 3 or 4 one-on-one shots on goal. Cafu even smiled and shrugged when he kicked it right into the arms of the beaten goalie. That showed a lot of class, I thought. No reason to run up the score on a beaten team. Let them return home with some dignity and feeling they belonged on the same field with a superpower in football.
Ghana was simply outgunned and showed that they are a horrible finishing team (just like the US). I think only Germany has a chance against Brazil, if Brazil can avoid key injuries and bookings. I don’t see any other remaining team that Brazil can’t wipe out in similar fashion as today’s rout.

Great work Ghana… you fought Great Brasil… and you only lost by 3 shot… not bad for a first timer… Africa and the world honors you… Well done Ghana

Hey Ghana, well done you guys were great! I believe you were robbed when the second goal went in, it was definately off side and you were looking the better side and could have won it if the ref had worn glasses!

I’m sure we will see Ghana again in 2010. Soon African teams will be fighting for the title. You have all the potential to make this true.

Well done Ghana! You are a great team, played excellent, it’s a shame what happened with Brazil, but I know you guys will be back next WC and will kick some major ass!

I wonder if the world is seeing what FIFA is doing…..and I wonder what Hayatu is doing in Germany. Cant he see that RACISM is still alive in this very world cup in terms of officiating of the matches. I watch in awe as the slovakia refree robbed the poor africans in day light for Brazilians. This is what I called DAY LIGHT ARMED ROBBERY in football. It really absurd and very funny to know that the refree was begging ronaldo to give him his jersey. What a shame!!! When the meet with the Germans….they rob for me to see. All the goals that the Brazilians scored were “awam and azaah” goals. When at all will some the whiteman stop cheating africans. I think its time africans must get up and fight for their right. What a RAT RACE in football!!!! God don punish the slovakia refree.

This World Cup has been very badly and consequently unfairly officiated. Are the referees even trained for this kind of tournament? Or did FIFA just pick people from politically correct countries to officiate such an important tournament.
This referees have been very unfair to nations that they deem not to be football Kings. How else would you justify a penalty in the last minute to Italy after Australia clearly controlled that game? Totti was not even touched by the Australian defender. How would you explain a clearly off-side goal by Adriano to count? How do you explain Ghana players getting yellow cards for merely breathing the same air as Ronaldinho while the same Ronaldinho gets a slap on the wrist for going for a Ghanaian player’s foot. What professional referee gives out eighteen cards in one game four of them red just to ensure that the team that meets England is diaabled?????
My theory is that, these referees have been told which teams should be present at the quarters, Semis and eventually finals, An African or Asian team according to them does not deserve a slot beyond the second round, the smaller teams like Australia do not deserve a place in the quarters either. The only team that is going to the quarters that is not a ‘football giant’ is Ukraine. I know FIFA wish it was a more glamorous team like Spain, Sweden or Czech going through but apparently one referee didn’t listen to the instructions right.
The World Cup is going to loose meaning. Even our own African Cup of Nations is refereed much better. Is it written in stone that Brazil has to be at the Finals for it to be a successful tournament? A day is coming when Africa and even Asia will rule the world of football. This tournament has been proof of that. The African teams especially Ghana have nothing to be ashamed of. They gave the big teams a run for their money. Asia and the Middle East did not perform badly either. This year the team with the biggest thrashing was a European team Serbia and Montenegro.
If it wasn’t for bad refereeing, I believe this tournament would still be worth watching. But as for now what the hell do we watch????, Seven teams that have always had the spot light when it comes to football and one team (Ukraine) that will definitely be eliminated in the quarters because Italy always goes through to the next round if it is playing the underdogs? The referees would even score a goal themselves just to ensure this happens.
I though FIFA could do better than this and I am very worried of how worse it will be when Africa (South Africa) hosts the world cup in 2010. I’M VERY DISAPPOINTED???

I just want to say that all of you should really be proud of your team’s efforts in this world cup. I watched all the matches and I must say that I felt that the one against Brazil was an Epic performance. Beautiful soccer played by your team. But it has been proven time and time again, great football really has nothing to do with winning the match! unfortunately.
In final,I just wanted to also say, good luck I will be looking forward to many more appearances from African teams.

African teams really are a load of rubbish. So much yet again for Pele’s comments that an African team would win the world cup. Maybe they will but at this rate they’ll still be getting knocked out early in the year 3006!
Brazil won easily without even trying. That’s the only reason that you were getting chances otherwise it would have been about 8 NIL!

Mike,
Are you sure your name is not “Jerry Hubber” that “Hitler-Racist” on the blogs here?
African teams are Rubbish but at least they Qualified to participape! Scotland did not!
You think a country like Nigeria or Cameroun will go down with 6 goals in tghis World Cup? I can tell you an European team that did!
And Pele understands more about football than you.
