Mexico match critical to Doya’s Fate?

February 27th, 2006 | By: Robert | No Comments »

In a surprise move today, GFA president Kwasi Nyantakyi issued comments on the future role of the Grandmaster, Ghana head technician Ratomir “Doya” Dujkovic that were somewhat less than decisive. In fact, Nyantakyi equated his future to a chess match in which one sharp move, in this case the pending Ghana/Mexico friendly, could mean the difference between a trip to Germany and one to parts unknown.

Nyantakyi told BBC Sport that “no decision yet has been taken to retain or sack the coach.” He added that the GFA “are reviewing the situation and we have to proceed with caution and great care.” A decision will be made, however, by the time that the squad returns to Accra from Dallas.

So much for caution and great care! One might think the situation somewhat unfair for Doya, especially given that he will be participating less a first team keeper and with virtually no experienced attack. In addition, stalwarts Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien have not practiced with the team this year, leaning towards a somewhat disorganized setting.

On the other hand, considerable damage has already been done by the head technician’s foolhardy gambits, not least of which has been the mounting allegations of pay-to-play favoritism on the basis of Doya’s role as a talent representative for certain European club interests. It might be both fair and fitting (and might keep within the mercurial nature of the Doya) to place the weighty decision on a proverbial roll of the dice.
