Scapegoats
As predicted, it took only two days for the vipers of the Nigerian press to recommend the Grandmaster’s ouster. Ghana head technician Ratomir Dujkovic’s success in gaining Ghana its first World Cup qualification has of late been overshadowed by its dismal performance in CAN, in which it scored as many own goals as goals against opponents.
On that note, Ghana officials were particularly harsh in their criticism of striker Joetex Frimpong, whose ineffectual performance was frequently reiterated: “He was a disappoint. He could not even play well and missed so many opportunities. We gave him equal opportunity to prove himself but he failed woefully. Oh Charlie! He was awful.” The Nigeria based Frimpong surely must hang his head in shame and wonder where his place will be when injured Asamoah Gyan returns to the lineup.
Despite heaping blame on Frimpong for the Stars’ offensive woes, one must consider that Matthew Amoah was initially held out of the crucial Zimbabwe match. This decision effectively castrated the Ghana attack. Perhaps that decision should lead to further inspection of the Stars’ fitness for Germany.
