What is best for Ghana

June 17th, 2006 | By: Robert | 60 Comments »

After the moment of victory has been savored the true Ghana fan has to wonder whether we can’t ask for more. Right now we trail by a goal in differential to the Czechs. Question is what result in Italy-USA would be best for us?

From my perspective, an Italy win would be disastrous. Italy would have no incentive to beat Czech Republic, who will doubtless be hungry. And the US will be needing to save serious face. (PS Italy just scored, so maybe a draw is best possibility to hope for)

An American victory might be better, but only somewhat. With all teams at 3 goals, Ghana would be in with a win. But, US would smell blood, and Ghana would be behind Czechs on goal differential.

A draw to me would be best. Italy would have the lead and Ghana would be in third, but US would have saved some face (leading them to lay off a bit versus Ghana), and Italy would not have a safe lead, meaning that the class of the group would have to play to win. In these terms, a Ghana win or draw would pass them through.

What do you think?

Unfortunate but true Gyan is not playing against team USA on Thursday. Let’s hope Ghana have made allowances for that.
GOOOO GHANA!

Lest we forget: We must also give credit to the Serbian coach Ratomir Dujkovic of Ghana. He also did a great job.

Now let us see how the US performs against Ghana.

Not only the Czechs lost that game against Ghana. There is news out there that lots of people lost millions of dollars betting against Ghana in thier last match. They also lost!!

Ghana’s win seems surprpising but that country has a reservior of soccer talents. Just remember Freddy Adu of USA, Tony Yeboah, Abedi-Pele, and lots more in major European teams.

Roger Milla of Cameroun said 16 years ago that people will fall in love with the Ghana Football team if they ever come to the world cup. He is right.

Football legend Pele’s predition of an African team winning the World Cup by 2000 did not comer true. But I believe an African team could pull it off in 2010. Nigeria, Cameroun, Ghana, Senegal will all be eying that Cup in 2010

Hey Brazillian are you still there? It will be a real fireworks to see Brazil-Ghana match. Brazilian Soccer Artists against Ghana soccer Ahletes. That will be magic!

Yep, that’s true and now that they tied with Italy, they are going to play their hearts out!

This will be a great game to watch.

Ghana beating the United States — as we say in west african pidgin — dat one go be small thing!

i also think Africa will win the cup in 2010 — it will be the first time the games come to our continent and the excitement alone and mad support the entire continent will have for each african team will cause our teams to play their hearts out. Plus, for the first time, we will have stadiums packed full with fans cheering for our teams. After disappointing our continent by not qualifying, the traditional soccer powers of the continent (Nigeria and Cameroun) will certainly qualify and will give the euro and south american teams some competition. Lots to look forward to.

But back to the task at hand — I pray Ghana wins against the U.S!!

UT:
I am not over-confident.
It is the other way round. The US has alway thought of Ghana as easy to defeat.

Lots of talks on US campuses and those that love soccer seemed to place Ghana as source of cheap points for the USA team!!!.
Even the US Coach Brue Arena:
Bruce Arena had the audacity to say on NATIONAL TV that Ghana is a guaranteed 3 POINTS FOR THE USA team. He said that Ghana was a team that he wasn’t going to waste much time on!!!

This show named “The Drive To Germany” was telecasted on ABC around 2:30pm EST!!!!

POLITICS and SPORTS: Sadly politics has entered into this game. The entire world will be watching Thursday and supporting the small country Ghana not only because Ghana has won the admiration of the world in soccer, but what they see as President Bush & USA trying to bully the rest of the world.

Due to that Israeli Flag scenario by Pantsill of Ghana, even the traditional Isreali support of US may go to Ghana!!!
Let us only hope the game is fair!

People who let politics determine who they pull for or against in a sporting event aren’t worth worrying about. I also don’t believe for one second that Arena ever said (or would say) that Ghana was a “guaranteed 3 points for the USA.” Nope. You made that up or you didn’t hear it correctly.

The great thing about the Czech v. Ghana game was that it was not fluke. They may need to change their tactics for the US and expose US’s team’s weaknesses. GO GHANA!

p.s. I had never heard of this country until the World Cup…hearing good things, I might visit

John:
I was not the only one who heard Bruce Arena’s comments. It has been on Blogs all over too. Could they all have heard it INCORRECTLY or made it up?

Why dont you call ABC and verify it yourself? The show was Telecasted SUNDAY, JUNE 4, 2:30 3:30pm “The Drive To Germany”

I don’t need to verify it. Arena is many things. Stupid isn’t one of them. He’d never guarantee a win, especially not against a quality side like Ghana. This is a lie being spread to fire up the Ghana team, plain and simple. Good tactic, but a lie is a lie nonetheless.

Bruce Arena did not have to even say what he said for the eveyrone to know team U.S.A probably paid no attention to Ghana until Ghana beat Czech. Up until the Ghana Czech game (and even after) every ESPN comment on the USA Ghana game assumed the USA would win. I remember when the WC began and i commented to my American co-worker that Ghana and the U.S. would tie, he looked at me as if I was speaking some ancient Egyptian language. He looked me and arrogantly said, “we’ll beat Ghana for sure.” (of course after the U.S. lost 3-0 to czech and the ghanaians won 2-0 ag. the Czech, he’s been trying to avoid me!). All my support to Ghana! I know you can do it! The U.S. needs to learn to eat some humble pie. Thank God economic superpower doesn’t necessarily equal soccer superpower.

i’m not expecting the referees to be biased, unless it is an african or U.S referee. An african referee will favor Ghana and a U.S. referee will favor the U.S. I think referees from other parts of the world may slightly favor Ghana (because most of the world sees the U.S. as a bully — unfortunately), but not enough to affect the games outcome. forza ghana!!

Unfortunately i didn’t get to watch any of the Ghanians games, so i’m not quite sure how strong of a team Ghana is even though they beat Check rep.. but, all i can say right now is they need to start out hard right from the beginning to set a tone for the U.S…Go Ghana do your thang, make the African community proud!! good luck

John, why are you denying that Arena never said that? Ricky has given you all the references (Telecasted SUNDAY, JUNE 4, 2:30 3:30pm ) to cross check but youve refused. Now you are implying that Ricky is lying. You need to apologise to Ricky. If i were a coach before the world cup, i would have said the same thing. Ghana had a disastrous African Cup campaign and were completely written off. Even across Africa other than in Ghana, there was no confidence in the team. People only started believing in them after the Czech match. I think that Arena spoke too soon and his words may come to haunt him.

the US MNT always had the impression that they were favorites over Ghana from the get-go. bruce arena even implied this on more than one occasion.

I’m a Ghanaian living in South Africa and the match is about to kick off in about an hour. I’m excited and nervous. For their sakes I hope the Ghana team is more relaxed.
Good luck Ghana. This is gonna be an interesting match.

Zombi Thanks.
Regarding what John said about me, I couldnt have framed a better response to him than the one you gave him

As for that Brazil team, I dont want to be in thier position.
The Africans have finaly come up with a formular:”SPEED”
Given the facts as they now stand, Brazil would very much prefer Italy. It would also be easier for Brazil to deal with a loss to Italy than Ghana!!

The Ghanaians will do more diving and SEAL their goal post! You can bet on that!

during the half time of the very first game of the wc, julie foudy from the US women team and her announcers said that the only teams the US should worried about were the Italians and the czech’s. which I thought was very funny. and then she went on to called the Ghanaian players the black horses and that speed is their only advantage. so the ghanaian were not given any credit at all.so i can imaging bruce making a comment like that even though it’s a facts that he said the US will beat Ghana 3-0. he under estimated the ghanians which led US to loss.

The problem with the USA is they think they are the best in evrything!!
But life is not that way. They should have learned this in thier old Country and Western Gun-Slingers- Culture. There always comes a new guy in town who can shoot faster!

Ghana lost to Brasil 3-0. I’m very disappointed with the ghanaian team ;the fact that they couldn’t put one inthe goal with all the chances they had. one of our bigges disadvantage is that we couldn’t finish and that hurt us.Brasil on the other hand knew how to finish even though two of their goals where offside. I give them some credit for they way they played. But as team i don’t think brasil have the chemistry. but indiviually they are good. so their win against the Ghanaians were individual effort. if they keep on playing like that, they will not win WC. as a matter fact brasil is not going to win this wc. the great Ronaldinho has not done anything to show his great abilities. what do you guys think about their Ghanaians?

yeah i like all the comments’,cos everyone have a choice and should be respected. I feel Ghana is up to the task only that they need to fasten their nuts to do better, and even beat Brazil. I wish them all the best.
