What will it take to shake the Underachiever tag?

May 25th, 2006 | By: Robert | No Comments »

In the building frenzy for the World Cup, the giddy Ghana press has proclaimed that the Black Stars, entering their first World Cup despite four CAN championships and a solid history of individual performance, have shed the underachiever tag. Around here, we are a little wary of premature pronouncements. If, for example, the Stars are blanked in the Cup and lose all three matches, would this not sustain the belief that the Stars are underachievers?

If the Stars advance, a hope that is building as the Stars finally begin to build momentum, they would clearly shed the label, and perhaps become the world’s new darlings. If they fail to advance but play the role of the spoiler, is that enough?

What kind of performance will it take to finally shed the label of underachievers? Open forum.
