Sellas Tetteh resigns!
Sellas Tetteh has resigned as Rwanda’s national team coach after being in the job for barely two years.
Rwanda’s football governing body (FERWAFA) confirmed hours ago that the ex-Ghana under 20 World Cup winner presented his resignation and it was accepted.
He has been in the job since February 2010, following his exploits with leading an unheralded Ghana to win the World Youth Championships in Egypt.
His task was to lead the Amavubi Stars to the next African Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. However, he has just managed a win in five matches, the latest defeat being a 5-0 battering at the hands of Ivory Coast at home.
Rwanda face Benin in the last group match, due to be played away in Porto-Novo on October 8. They are bottom of the group with three points.
Tetteh said in his letter that he had left the job for “personal reasons”, thanking his employers and the fans. He would leave with sour memories of the fans as they roundly booed him after the humiliating loss to the star-studded Ivorians
“I thank the Rwanda Football Federation, the ministry of youth, sports and culture and all for their support during my tenure.”
His legacy would be the euphoria he gave Rwanda as they qualified for the Championship of African Nations earlier this year. He also guided them to a strong finishing at the CECAFA Challenge Cup in Tanzania last year, where they finished in the quarters.
But the weekend defeat by the Ivory Coast has left Rwanda bottom of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group H with only three points.
